The Great Hanshin-Awaji Earthquake which occurred on Jan. 17 1995 did tremendous damage not only to Japanese but also to about 80,000 foreign residents. The Foreigners' Earthquake Information Center, the predecessor of the CMIA, began providing them with necessary information and advice in 15 languages 5 days after the earthquake occurred. Subsequently, FEIC was reorganized as Center for Multicultural Information and Assistance in October 1995, to realize a multicultural society where the differences in nationality, language, culture, and sex would be recognized and respected.
